08.30.10 - Donations needed to save The Kiggins Theatre

DesignWorks founder, JJ Harris, to form non-profit corporation to save The Kiggins Theatre

In a fit of shear brilliance (or lunacy) JJ Harris and his wife, Sue, have decided to try to save The Kiggins Theatre from whatever doom may lie in wait. Vancouver, and Clark County, is in need of a meeting place where medium-sized audiences can experience live theatre, live music, academic lectures, and business symposiums at a reasonable price. The Kiggins Theatre can be just that.

Located within the Downtown Vancouver Art District, The Kiggins Theatre has had some rough times. Since 1950, the theatre has had trouble keeping the doors open. Built in 1935, The Kiggins Theatre was designed by Day Hilborn for J.P. Kiggins, who was Vancouver’s Mayor for multiple terms. He was also influential in building Kiggins Bowl.

The building, lately, has been used as a second-run movie house, selling two movies for $3. Until May of 2010, this had been the standard for a couple decades, but with the rising cost of concessions, the disrepair of the building, and Regal Cinemas converting their Plaza 10 building into a second-run house as well, The Kiggins just couldn’t keep up. Now it sits empty, awaiting its fate.

We believe that Clark County is ready for the Arts. A 2004 feasibility study states that Clark County residents are a peculiar demographic. They do not fit the mold of a group of people that are arts lovers, however a phone survey told that over 70% were in favor of a Fine Arts Center and more than 50% were in favor of tax dollars being put towards it.

We are not in favor of tax dollars being used, but we are in favor of a building being used for the fine arts. Our goal is to purchase The Kiggins Theatre, renovate the exterior back into historical significance (paint and repair to the marquee) and then nominate it to be listed on the National Historic Register. The Department of Archeology for the State of Washington has already ear-marked it as a site of historical significance, the paperwork just needs to be done. We will also renovate the interior to add a full stage for live theatre, live music and lectures. A new drop-down screen will be added so as to not lose the ability to still show movies.

But we need your help. The Harris’ do not have the cash to put forward to take on this endeavor. In fact, they are having a hard time scraping together the $1000.00 to file the letters of incorporation and to file with the IRS for 501(c)3 status.

The first $1000.00 dollars donated WILL NOT be tax deductible, however, once we have that money, we can file and then all other donations will be. We need your help. Please click the donate button below to donate to this cause. Thank you.
